Dropping Courses

Often students may have to attend a few classes before deciding if a course is right for them. If it is decided not to continue with the course, students should review the before officially withdrawing. Withdrawing from a course after the deadline will have financial and academic consequences.

Note: Non-attendance does not constitute an official withdrawal from a course. Courses must be dropped online through .

The does not apply to:

  • Executive MBA & Master of Finance programs

Academic & Financial Consquences

  • Dropping a course may also affect a student's full-time status at the University. Students need to be registered in a minimum of 3 courses per term to be considered a full-time student.

  • Not being a full-time student can affect:

    • Student Loans
    • Scholarships
    • Third-party sponsorships
    • Study permits for international students.

How to Drop Courses

  • Log in to 
  • Select 鈥淓nter Self-Service Banner鈥�
  • Enter your smu.ca email address and password. 
  • Select the "Student" tab at the top.
  • Select "Registration".
  • Select "Add or Drop Classes".
  • Select the appropriate term from the drop-down menu.
  • Beside each course is a drop-down menu
  • Select 鈥淲eb Drop鈥�.
  • Select 鈥淪ubmit Changes鈥�.
  • Double-check to make sure the class no longer appears in your schedule.
  • If you drop a course before the deadline, it will be removed from your transcript.
