For Hallie Wedge, earning a Sobey National Innovators Scholarship has made all the difference. But she couldn鈥檛 have done it without the support of her dad, who raised her as a single parent and made significant sacrifices to provide Hallie with the best possible opportunities. 鈥淚 worked diligently on my application and essay, seeking feedback from my dad often. It was very much a team effort,鈥 explains Hallie. But before she could complete her application, her father died suddenly on February 22, 2020. 鈥淗e had been battling kidney disease, heart disease, and diabetes for years. It was the most heartbreaking moment of my life and each day without him by my side, cheering me on, is just as difficult.鈥 A passionate athlete, Hallie played competitive field hockey throughout high school, and competed and medalled for Team Ontario at the Field Hockey National Championships twice. This fall, she joined the Saint Mary鈥檚 women鈥檚 field hockey team and looks forward to taking part in a few different business societies. After graduation, Hallie plans to earn her CPA designation and work in the financial services industry. Hallie isn鈥檛 new to the Sobeys community. As a part-time cashier at Sobeys in Grand Bay鈥揥estfield, she enjoyed 鈥渢he inclusive, generous, and wholesome environment.鈥 鈥淚t is my pleasure to let you know how much of a positive impact your kindness has had on my life鈥 As time goes by, I find things to look forward to each day,鈥 says Hallie. 鈥淭hrough your generosity I am able to fulfill my dream of鈥 making my dad proud. I know he will be looking over me as I begin this journey, something I could not have done without this scholarship.鈥
